Off to the Tower Theatre tonight and a trip back in time.
Back to December 1598 to be precise. It was a cold cold winter – far worse than we’ve got it now. Why even the Thames has frozen over and William Shakespeare and his Company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, were in trouble. The Lease had run out on the theatre and it was due to be pulled down.
The play tells of the daring plan Shakespeare, Burbage and the Company made to dismantle the theatre themselves one night and take it across the river to a new home on the Southbank.
Atmospheric lighting, mulled wine and Elizabethan music set the scene for an audience of around 200.
This was a community drama project run by JimJam Arts. The players have been working together for one 10 weeks and managed to pull off this play wonderfully in only 5 rehearsal…. For some performers it was their first time on stage…. It was written and directed by Victoria Gartner, Director of Will & Co and Bard in the Yard.
JimJam Arts plan to restart regular drama sessions open to all in the New Year.
